New Presentation for Menus

posted at Sun Oct 4 14:05:46 2009 by admin

I've changed the way that menus are presented. The old style used a Javascript library called Thickbox which was problematic. It broke quite a while ago, forcing people to download menu pages in order to read them.

hReviews, URLs

posted at Thu Jun 25 10:51:59 2009 by admin

UVFood now supports the hReview microformat. This should allow software to locate and parse reviews from UVFood's pages. We already support hCard, which allows vCard-like functionality embedded in a web page - allowing software to locate and parse contact information from a page.

Site Updates

posted at Fri Nov 21 01:34:55 2008 by admin

You may have noticed some changes in the visual presentation of comments.

Comments now have a "permalink", which gives you a URL that you can permanently link to in order to go directly to a particular comment.

Comments and reviews now show a default user icon. Don't worry if you can't figure out how to upload a photo yet. I'm still trying to get the uploading code working well enough to let other people use it. It's coming soon, but right now many users would find it an exercise in frustration. Building something that works well across different web browsers can be very difficult.

Account Management Update

posted at Tue Oct 21 19:24:34 2008 by admin

I've just done a substantial update to UVFood.

Much of the work is focused on account creation and management. Users will now receive welcome email and a link to click to confirm their email address. They have full use of the system before confirming, but none of their reviews or ratings will be visible to other users until they confirm.

Account Creation and Review Bug Fixes

posted at Wed Oct 1 23:09:53 2008 by admin

I've updated the software to correct a couple of problems. The first problem is with account creation. Users would not be automatically logged in after creating an account. This was the result of a bug which has been fixed. The other problem was that some users would get a message saying "Loading..." when trying to enter a new review of comment.

iPhone Support

posted at Mon Sep 1 16:24:00 2008 by admin

I'm pleased to release the first version of UVFood's support for Apple's iPhone. The iPhone interface is a set of web pages specially tailored to the iPhone, designed to load quickly over the slow data connections you'll get when using Edge. The interface allows you to quickly find lists of restaurants in a given town, or by a given cuisine. You can easily get to the full UVFood listing if you want, or check the location on the map.

Minor Search Improvement

posted at Fri Aug 1 07:36:55 2008 by admin

I've changed the links to towns on the front page so that their search results will show only places in those towns. Before this change they would show listings with the town name anywhere in the listing - so, for instance, if you were looking for restaurants in Plainfield (good luck with that!) you would also find restaurants on Plainfield Road in Lebanon. This change also applies to links from town names in listings. If you type the name of a town in the search box and do a search, you'll still find all matches for it, not just listings that are in that town.

Menus!

posted at Sat Jul 26 19:49:30 2008 by admin

I'm very happy to release the first version of menu support for UVFood. UVFood has provided a link to online menus that a restaurant may offer on its web site, but until now it has been unable to display a restaurant's menus itself. Restaurant listings now have a "Menu" tab which will take you to a page which will show you any menus we may have for the restaurant.

Have I Got a Deal For You!

posted at Sun Jun 1 21:39:38 2008 by admin

With gas and food prices both on the rise, for many people it's harder to make the decision to go out and eat. Some restaurants offer special discounts which may help you have the chance to catch a meal out while keeping the cost down.

Verified Organizations

posted at Mon May 26 13:51:59 2008 by admin

Back when UVFood started, the sources which we seeded our database from contained many restaurants which had closed already. We knew about some of these and were balancing our time in writing code versus working on updating the database. As a result, some listings for closed restaurants appeared as still open.
