Back when UVFood started, the sources which we seeded our database from contained many restaurants which had closed already. We knew about some of these and were balancing our time in writing code versus working on updating the database. As a result, some listings for closed restaurants appeared as still open.
We've made a conscious decision at UVFood to keep closed listings in our database. Why? Because you might like to find out whatever happened to your favorite restaurant. You might like to find out the name of the chef so that you can see where he or she has moved on to. Or you might like to see what's taken its place.
Restaurants which are closed are marked clearly at the top of the listing, "CLOSED". You can look at a list of closed restaurants by checking out The Dead Zone on the Explore pages. You can even get a feed of closed restaurants if you're interested in seeing when places shut down.
Chances are, though, that you're more interested in what's still open, and interested in accurate information. It's tough to keep up to date as restaurants change. Yes, their location and phone numbers rarely if ever change but their hours can shift with very little notice.
UVFood is contacting restaurants periodically in order to update their information. On listings which have been confirmed, you'll now see a big green "VERIFIED" badge, including the date that the information (including hours) was last updated on. When we "verify" a restaurant, it means that we've confirmed that the phone number, address, email, web site, location on the map, and hours are all accurate.
You'll also see badges in lists of restaurants, including search results. A green square indicates that the listing was verified within the last 90 days. A blue square indicates that a listing has changed within the last 60 days. And a purple square indicates that the listing has changed since you last viewed (this feature requires that you be logged in with a UVFood account, otherwise we can't tell who you are in order to keep track of what you've looked at).
We're still working on verifying some of the listings we carry, and we need to periodically check in to see if hours have changed. You can check out the listings we've verified at the "Verified" section under /explore to see the most recent listings we've confirmed.
