Fat Rooster Farm at the Norwich Farmer's Market

Today's farmer's market spotlight shines on Jennifer Megyesi and Kyle Jones' Fat Rooster Farm in South Royalton.

Fat Rooster Farm is an organic farm, offering organic meats (beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, pork) , many varieties of heirloom tomatoes, corn, squash and other veggies, eggs, maple syrup and even shitake mushrooms. Their tomatoes aren't the only heirlooms they raise - their lambs are heritage breeds - Southdown, Tunis, Dorset and Blue-faced Leicester. They even sell hand-made wooden bowls.

During the winter you can purchase CSA shares and use them to buy any products you want from the farm throughout the season, including meat and seedlings. Look at it as an investment in the farm which allows them to finance their operations and allows you to buy their products at a discount.

Fat Rooster Farm also occasionally takes on farm apprentices who will live on the farm (in a spare room in the family house or in a small cabin near the farm) and eat with Jennifer and Kyle's family while they learn to farm. No experience is needed, just a willingness and ability to work hard.

Fat Rooster Farm does a great job of keeping in touch with its customers through both Facebook and its own blog. It also attends the Norwich Farmer's Market weekly.

One of the things you can buy from Fat Rooster Farm is their own pasture-raised turkeys. If you want to reserve a turkey for Thanksgiving it's never too early to get in touch about it.

Jennifer Megyesi has this to say about Fat Rooster Farm's farmer's market experience:

"Perhaps the most important aspect of the farmer's market for us here at the farm is not the sheer volume of business, but the personal connection with our customers. Unlike a larger co-op or grocery store, we have one-on-one time with every person who visits our stand. We can describe the taste of a black prince tomato, let them know that brandywine is not the only heirloom out there with a stunning taste and a unique appearance. We can show them the rare heirloom zucca rampicante, a vining zucchini with knock your socks off flavor and a funky shape. They taste our fresh salsa and spinach garlic scape pesto. the farm to food in the pantry connection is completed at the farmer's market."
