Ice Cream? Gelato!

Chocolate and meringue gelato from Morano Gelato in Hanover

Today we'll take a look at a business which got started at a farmer's market and is now moving into retail: Morano Gelato.

Gelato, in case you're not familiar with it, is ice cream, only different. And Italian. With less butterfat and usually less sugar, it's usually denser and richer in flavor than the ice cream most Americans are familiar with. And many American "gelati" are pale imitations of true Italian gelato.

Not so with Morano Gelato. Morano Gelato is the result of brother and sister Jordan and Morgan Morano spending many years in France and Italy, with Morgan training with a Siciilian Gelato Chef. After returning home to the Upper Valley they decided to start their own gelato business, using both traditional and local flavors and ingredients. Their flavors change frequently. To give you an idea of what you might expect, when I wrote this article they had greek yogurt, merignue, cinnamon, chocolate, chocolate chip, vanilla milk, pistachio and hazelnut gelato available. They also had strawberry sorbet and yellow honeydew sorbet.

They started out selling at the Hanover Farmer's Market and became so popular that they were able to utilize space at Rosey Jeke's Cafe in Hanover to gain a retail presence. Unfortunately for the farmer's market, their success has meant that they will no longer be able to vend a the market due to staffing issues. Still, it's great to see a success get its start at the market and be able to grow beyond it, and Rosey Jekes is only a brief walk from the market.

Jordan and Morgan had this to say about the market:

"Our experience at the Farmer's Market has been wonderful! It has been crucial in helping us build a following through exposure of our business and product. It is where we first premiered our product and where we were able to let new and returning customers know about our move to Rosey Jekes. It's also great to take part in the farmer's market because its existence reinforces our own ideals as a business: producing a high quality, fresh product locally, and this not only sets us apart from many other domestic gelato shops but is continuously supported by participating in the farmer's market."

You can keep up to date with their latest news and flavors on their Facebook page, on their web site and at UVFood, which automatically imports updates from Facebook. Note that their hours are independent of Rosey Jeke's hours - they are open later some days than the rest of the cafe.
