The Return of the Farmer's Markets
Posted by admin on Sun May 4 00:08:43 2008 to Upper Valley Food:During the (arguably) warmer months of the year I have a Saturday morning habit. I'll get up and head to Norwich, trying to arrive at roughly 9AM - when The Norwich Farmer's Market opens.
Once I'm there I'll make a circuit of the market, usually stopping by Umpleby's for a sausage roll for breakfast, then making a counter-clockwise circuit around the market, possibly picking up some elk or pork or chicken, some bagels from The Baker's Studio and getting some vegetables from Hurricane Flats and Luna Bleu Farm.
I don't mean to slight any of the other vendors by not mentioning them - there are plenty of other people selling great vegetables (and fruits, and berries, and baked goods, and crafts), but these happen to be the ones that really bring me to the market.
The Norwich Farmer's Market is the earliest area market to open, and the latest to close. It's always less crowded at the start and end, with fewer customers and fewer vendors, and the people who are there are often bundled up. I've seen October markets with snow in the air or even on the ground. Today wasn't quite that bad, but it was a cold and dreary morning. Despite the weather, people turned out for the ritual of the first market of the year and were rewarded with ramps and fiddleheads, eggs, wool, cheese, pastries, spinach, beets, all manner of greens and more.
The other area markets will be opening in the coming weeks. Check back here for a list of their opening dates.
