Upper Valley Food News - Spring Update

Posted by admin on Wed Jun 3 00:21:43 2009 to Upper Valley Food

It's been too long since the last news update, and a lot has happened. The last few months have seen the expansion of a couple of popular local chains (as will the future), the reopening of a popular restaurant and the closings of several restaurants around the area.

Comings

The two highest profile openings are Yama's new location in Hanover, opened in January, affectionately known as "Yama II". Word is it's been doing a very good business since it opened.

Also, Elixir has re-opened under new owners and management, formerly of Canoe Club and Carpenter & Main. The new Elixir has a slightly different take on its food from the old one and is also well reviewed.

And New York Bagels & Cafe has opened in West Lebanon in the Sears plaza, and is likewise well reviewed. Obviously they serve bagels - one of the few local places offering proper boiled bagels - in addition to breakfast and lunch sandwiches and comfort food.

Coming Soons

Golden Ming's second location, Kam Ming in Enfield, should be opening any day now. The first location is quite popular and they should be a good fit with Enfield.

And Salt Hill is opening a third location, this time in Hanover, which we expect will likely do very well. The new Salt Hill will be located at 7 Lebanon St. in the C Beston space. It's not expected to open until October, but keep in mind that they're converting the space from a furniture store to a restaurant, which takes a lot more work than simply renovating an existing restaurant.

Goings

Not surprisingly given the recent state of the economy, there have been more closings than openings.

The 4 Aces Diner closed suddenly in December.

Domino's in West Lebanon and Claremont also closed over the winter.

Quizno's foray into the Upper Valley also failed this spring as both the Hanover and Claremont locations closed.

Jackson House closed their restaurant over the winter and the entire inn may have closed as well.

Urban Cafe in Quechee also closed over the winter, as did Woodstock's William Winand Chocolatier.

And finally, Carpaccio in Hanover closed this spring as well. Carpaccio had a particularly tough row to hoe, being a fine dining restaurant located in a non-scenic basement with no views.

UVFood wishes the best for the owners and staff of recently closed restaurants. The restaurant business is tough in the best of times and these are certainly not the best of times.
