what a wonderful place! My first time at carpenter and main i had the scallops which practically melted in my mouth, i've also had the burger, which is amazing, and the cheese plate, which is lovely and consists of cheeses all from local producers whom you can read about on the menu. most recently, my wife had the lobster and crab chowder, which was rich and dilectable--a spiritual experience for the palette. i enjoy sitting at the bar, the staff is friendly, knowledgable, and capable (good service can be hard to find in the area and the staff at carptener and main go far above and beyond the norm, helping to create a wonderful experience). The wine list is diverse and the bartender helped us pick out some nice glasses of wine. it is slightly on the pricey side, but you get what you're paying for--all the produce and meat comes from local farms and is of the highest quality and prepared to perfection. i would definitely recommend carpenter and main and suggest sitting in the tavern or at the bar!

The Dining Room is good but a bit on the pricy side. I've eaten most of the food on the tavern side and I enjoyed it quite a bit. The burger, pork loin, and seafood crepes stood out. The service was also above the norm for the uppervalley

The main dishes were bland and overly salted and buttered. The escargot was earthy and gritty. It didn't seem to be complemented by the cream herb sauce which was too light to mask the earthiness. My pinot gris had sediment in it being from the bottom of the bottle but the server dismissed it as "normal" as opposed to offering me another glass. My husband and I felt that it didn't meet the standards expected of a highly priced meal.

Great food and great sirvice! best to sit in tavern not dining room. If you have to wait for a Table in the tavern it's worth the wait.

Dinner in the pub was enjoyable with 3 exceptions. 1. My red wine was served in a rather narrow/small white wine glass which I found frustrating for such an "upscale" restaurant. 2. My burger was excellent but was ordered med and came out on the rare side. 3. The cranberry bean salad was rather dry and unimaginative...perhaps a more genreous bed of lettuce would have been a better presentation.
