Disappointing. Noisy. We enjoy La Caretta.

Eh. Typical fake-Mex, typical souvenir-shop decor, spotty service. I wouldn't go there unless I was meeting people or going with a group. For that, it's fine.

I'm not a huge fan of Tex-Mex (prefer real Mexican) but there are a few dishes here that stand out. The Queso Fundito with chorizo is a delicious treat (heck yeah it's greasy), and my favorite dishes are some of their tomatillo preparations (e.g. the chimichangas). Unfortunately they get things like black beans and refried beans wrong, which there's no excuse for. The decor is festive, all really from Mexico, even if extravagant. There's never a lack of staff working here, though service is squarely hit or miss. You'd think it was a big national brand for all the pros and cons that applies, but as far as I can tell all the food is made on-site (prefer the slow-cooked meats when you can). Prices are a little on the high side of what you'd expect, but they seem to have made a viable business of it. I'd have given it 4 stars, knocking only one off for inconsistent service and bad beans, if they billed themselves as Tex-Mex, so you knew what you were going for, but they still call themselves "Tio Juan's Margaritas Mexican Restaurant and Watering Hole" as of this writing, which it's not.

If you're looking for authentic Mexican food, well, you're going to have to leave the Upper Valley, at least. Having gone to college in Southern California, I can tell you that this is Southern California-influenced Mexican food (you won't find chili there, unlike at a Tex-Mex restaurant). If you can accept it for what it is, I think the food here is pretty good; it's always been fresh and tasty to me. And as they should be for a place named for them, their margaritas are pretty good as well. But yeah, that music and decor is pretty corny.

When ever we go here, it is disappointing. The food is salty and everything tastes the same. They need some truly spicy menu items and something to make them not just another bland Tex-Mex restaurant.

I like this place! Their salads are crunchy fresh, the dressings delicious. Yes, the decor is hokey but less so than other Mex restaurants. I know it falls short on authenticity, but the food is tasty and always served hot. I can tolerate a lot more hot spice, but I understand they think they need to "Americanize" the food for the masses.

Americanized Tex-Mex is the best way to describe this place. I wouldn't call pretty much anything they serve Mexican food, but with the proper expectations it is "alright". Lets start with the good, the namesake margarita's they serve are actually pretty good, the chips and salsa are free+plentiful and have a nice flavor to it (if you like the salsa the exact same recipe is available at local supermarkets like the co-op), and they have several vegetarian options, and the overall decor and ambiance is pretty nice. Much more refined and finished than say Gusanoz. The bad is that the food is very bland and relies on massive quantities of cheese (which can be a bit greasy) to make things taste good, to their ubiquitous chipotle mayo or guacamole. Dishes lack flavor and spice and sometimes aren't really cooked enough. One example are their veggie fajitas which often times come out practically raw. Expect a straightforward protein/tortila/vegtables presentation to all the items with essentially all the same ingredients. All of that being said its usually consistent in terms of service and food with no big problems. My main gripe would be the whole place being inauthentic as a Mexican restaurant.

A typical chain Mexican place with brightly colored Mexican decorations and music playing a bit too loud. You get a big plate of food with lots of beans and cheese. They have lots of different flavored Margaritas. Sometimes, it's just what I want, though.
