White river jct. is on! In my opinion WRJ has three of the best values in the Upper Valley and it amazes me that most people I bump into havenât been to White river in Years. I canât wait to see what this town looks like in a few more years. My three favorite places are all in one town and in walking distance from each other. I am a vegetarian I enjoy the amount of effort that the Tip top café commits to vegetarian dishes on their small menu. The food is always playing twists on favorites just stretching a bit outside my comfort zone to bring me and my wife something exciting. Then there is the tucker box café, again the staff is always bright happy and you can tell they love what they are doing, you see it in their work but they seem to take it seriously also. I love the falafel, followed by a chai latte. And now my life will be complete with the new Elixirs opening soon, I know Jane and Skip and cant wait to enjoy a real cocktail and some live music once againâ¦.just think all in our little town of White river. Just a side note, the only way to keep these small independent (anti-chain store) restaurants open is to visit themâ¦â¦have dinner and tell a friend. |
Whenever I'm in the vicinity of WRJ, I make a point to stop in for lunch. The menu items are unique, always fresh, pretty and (of course) very tasty. The only common complaint is that the room gets very noisy during busy times. I wish they'd do something to dampen the reverberations.

Presentation and quality of food are superb. The wait staff are both friendly and professional. We had dinner on a Wednesday night before a theater performance and the restaurant was very busy, but neither the food nor the service were diminished. Pricing is reasonable. The only negative comment is that they are not open Sunday evenings for dinner.

Saturday, I got up too late to do one of my diner reviews. But, lunch time was rolling around, so after 30 minutes of checking out the latest at the Cooler Gallery, Carol and I headed over to the Tip Top Cafe to check out the third cafe to inhabit this nice little spot for lunch (since it was lunchtime, and they don't do breakfast).
We had quite a good lunch at the Tip Top. While the lunch menu is your basic "soups and sandwiches" menu, the items on the menu are actually fairly creative. My roast beef sandwich (the "Full of Bull") had some nice caramelized onions and a horseradish mayo on it (although it was basically on a bulky roll, and I think something a little more hearty would've worked better), while Carol's ham sandwich had a fig jam on it (the "Hammy Jammy"), and both were served with a nicely dressed but not overdone green salad. We also shared a nice cup of tomato basil soup that was tangy and not overly salty. Overall, we had no complaints. The service was friendly and efficient, the food was both creative and good, and the portions were reasonable (neither oversized nor stingy). A bit too pricey for a regular lunchtime destination, but not too pricey to keep me from coming back on occasion when I'm in WRJ. (originally posted in Offbeat Eats) |
The food and service are great, and the place has a nice atmosphere.
The pork meatloaf is wonderful, and creatively presented.. the time that I had it it was a slice of meatloaf, grilled, over asparagus arranged on top of a serving of mashed potatoes and another serving of mashed sweet potatoes. Delicious. And the flavor of ginger in it is subtle. The tomato bisque tastes a little too much like pizza sauce to me... it's tasty, but not what I expect from bisque. |

I do love chicken salad but found their's be be not very tasty and a bit on the dry side...come on folks, you can do better than that! Add some onion powder, a bit more salt, maybe even a bit of poultry seasoning, more mayo and some halved grapes and a few slivered almonds or pine nuts....
The dinner menu I thought was a bit too pricy for entrees that mostly just didn't do it for me, so haven't tried dinner.
