Description
Umpleby's is now established at their new location in Hanover, near Dartmouth College.
They now offer home-made ice cream and sorbets.
If you've ever gone to the Norwich Famer's Market and seen a line most of the width of the market, you've probably seen the line for Umpleby's and have an idea how popular they are. They offer some of the most unique baked goods in New England, with a selection of both sweet and savory pastry.
The savory pastries include small pies like chicken, mushroom and leek; chicken curry; and traditional shepherd's pie, as well as spicy pork sausage rolls. While the savory pastries are uncommon in the US, they shouldn't overshadow Umpleby's sweet offerings, like raspberry brioche; chocolate, almond and plain croissants; and thick slices of maple almond brioche.
The kitchen is open at lunchtime to offer soups, sandwiches and salads in addition to the savory and sweet baked goods which are available all day long. Each day they offer a specific "slow food", often a hearty stew.
While they are not strictly local or organic, Umpleby's makes an effort to utilize local and organic foods when possible, using products from sources like Back Beyond Farm and King Arthur Flour.
Parking is available on the street (both metered and unmetered), in the back, and in the parking garage located at the corner of South St. and Currier Pl., within a block of them.

Fri Jun 13, 2008 by twoboysEverything is great. We love the spicy sausage rolls. I ordered a blond on blond birthday cake for my sister and it was out of this world. Can't wait for the next birthday. Need to order cakes a couple of days ahead. |
Wed Mar 26, 2008 by AUJesterI went to Umpleby's to get lunch to go for my husband and I. We had the Chicken Curry pie and the Chicken, Mushroom, Leek pie. Both pies had a good base flavor but the curry pie was a bit on the salty side and the CML pie needed some salt. The French Onion soup to go didn't include the cheese. We also had a Chocolate Croissant and a Coconut Macaroon, both extremely good. I am interested in trying the other baked goods Umpleby's has to offer. Just waiting for the right occasion. |

Mon Aug 27, 2007 by laraMmmmm, meat pies. This is the most British bakery I've smelled on the west side of the Atlantic. |
Mon Aug 27, 2007 by romkeyOh the lovely little meat pies! The sausage rolls! The maple almond brioches! Unique offerings that are always tasty... it will be bad for me when they finally get to move to Hanover. |
