I love the Bertie Wooster sandwich, although it is a bit pricey.

Umpleby's is now selling making burgers on Thursdays. The burgers are grass-fed local beef from Back Beyond Farm served on home-made brioche buns with a pickle, oven fries and coleslaw. You can add cheese, and the burgers come with the expected toppings - lettuce, tomato, onion.

I wouldn't have guessed that the fries were oven-fries. I asked about the oil they were fried in and at least on the day I was in, they used bacon fat! The fries were indeed bacony-delicious.

I went with a friend who is allergic to wheat who ate almost the whole bun on hers anyway.

The "Umpleburger" was a delicious burger and I'll be happy to go back for one any Thursday.

I used to frequent Umpleby's on a regular basis, until I saw the owner speaking to one of his employees one day. I was appalled at his tone and choice of words that he used towards his staff at the front counter.
I felt so badly for the young couple of kids who were obviously trying their best to get through the lunch crowd.
Although their food was once delicious, the way the owners treat their staff is unheard of, and left a bad taste in my mouth.

It's a good setting, but if you don't eat meat, there aren't many food options. Personally I think they should come up with more veggie pies as well as soups without meat. Usually there is only one choice for those who don't want meat. Sandwiches are not very impressive given that it is a bakery. How about tuna salad? Caprese? They could do more with the breads on the sandwiches. Pastries and baked goods are very good, although pricey sometimes for what you get. Excellent job on the bouche de noel. . .

Umpleby's deserves a better, more thorough review from me than I've given it before.

I first encountered them at the Norwich Farmer's Market. They stood out both because of the long line of people anxious to buy from them on Saturday morning, and also because of their unusual offerings and quality of their goods.

Their savory pies are unlike anything else in the area, and are delicious. I've eaten way too many of their sausage rolls and will eat many more. And their sweet pastries are top notch. Their croissants are as good as croissants that I've had in Europe. I greatly respect the fact that Charles bakes using great ingredients and proper techniques - if you get a pastry from Umpleby's it will be made with good flour and butter, not baking mix and margarine. And it shows.

Since they've moved to Hanover I've eaten there many times. I like the space; it's comfortable, homey and a bit eclectic. It's a good cafe environment. I've never been disappointed with anything I've gotten from them.

We choose Umpleby's to do dessert for our wedding this summer. Instead of a traditional wedding cake, we had a selection of pastries. Overall Umpleby's managed to make a huge number of small pastries for us, each one of which was as good as they would have been if it had been a much smaller order.

I also had the chance to try some proper Umpleby's wedding cake at a friend's recent wedding; it was delicious; everything a wedding cake should be.

I enjoy places that go in their own direction and don't offer the same-old-same-old that everyone else does. When someone does that and also does it well - that's a standout, and that's what Umpleby's is.

I have only been there once, for a cup of coffee and an eclair. Coffee was weak and lukewarm, the eclair was stale.

That sounds like another Hanover bakery. I've never had cold coffee or stale anything at Umpleby's - did you mention the problem to the staff? I'm sure they would have replaced both if there was a problem.

Yeah, I am sure they would have replaced everything, but why bother. The Dirt is So much better. Besides, I was in a business meeting.

Umpleby's has great pies - go in buy a couple dozen and take them home to eat. I really don't enjoy eating there - the sandwiches and other lunch fare have never impressed me and the service is both slow and often mildly incompetent.

The space is not particularly nice - rather cold, a bit sterile and it can be very noisy.

Everything is great. We love the spicy sausage rolls. I ordered a blond on blond birthday cake for my sister and it was out of this world. Can't wait for the next birthday. Need to order cakes a couple of days ahead.

I went to Umpleby's to get lunch to go for my husband and I. We had the Chicken Curry pie and the Chicken, Mushroom, Leek pie. Both pies had a good base flavor but the curry pie was a bit on the salty side and the CML pie needed some salt. The French Onion soup to go didn't include the cheese. We also had a Chocolate Croissant and a Coconut Macaroon, both extremely good. I am interested in trying the other baked goods Umpleby's has to offer. Just waiting for the right occasion.

Mmmmm, meat pies. This is the most British bakery I've smelled on the west side of the Atlantic.
